I'm a Welsh-American, born in the UK during World War II with bombs dropping. The air-raid shelter my mom almost had me in was blown up. I believe I'm here for a reason -- to dramatically simplify how golf is played, practiced, and taught!
“When I forgot everything and learned to simply swing the clubhead by feel, letting my body naturally follow the motion, I won 3 consecutive US National Championships. Before that I had a bad back. When I learned to simply swing the clubhead from Ernest Jones the strain ceased."
Virginia Van Wie -- former world #1
"Probably the most important and useful concept for the golfer is the idea of swinging, ever swinging as opposed to the idea of forceful hitting." Bobby Jones -- playing as an amateur, the only player in the history of golf to win Golf's Grand Slam--the British and US Open, British and US Amateur, in the same year.
From caddying at age 10 to captain of my high school team (at age 15 scoring 69 at the tough Bethpage Black, a US Open-Ryder Cup venue) and many college golf scholarship offers, I was on my way to becoming a fine player with no formal instruction.
While In Florida I went to America's #1 teacher thinking I would improve and then turn pro. I practiced diligently for a year on exactly what he said. I got worse! From there I went to two other teachers with national reputations. I got worse! After 16 months of frustration, I went from scratch to scoring 85, ready to quit the game I loved.
Looking back, I now realize these well-intended teachers taught the same thing (just different twists on the same mechanics taught today). What's sad is mechanics is not the answer. What's missing is: golf's one common denominator -- a swinging motion present in the clubhead. Without this clubhead motion, indisputable laws of motion prove no golfer plays well. With it any golfer plays well. The less you interfere with the motion, the better you play. Period!
My dear mother said, "Please try one more teacher for me. I know how you love golf."
I believe it was my destiny to meet the brilliant Nick Martino -- the late PGA head pro of the Lake Success CC on LI, NY. Nick was proud of the 15 club champions he created on Long Island.
Nick taught me all that he had learned pure and uncorrupted from the one-legged Ernest Jones -- America's foremost teacher for 40 years. Nick met Jones at age 9 shagging balls, lived near Jones, and was his confidant for 35 years until Jones passed on in 1965. I spent 7 years with Nick until he passed on.
The only two lessons that Nick had me watch him teach I wish everybody could see. They were remarkable -- light years ahead of today's instruction. One was completely silent. The other was to an eldery lady who had crippling arthritis in her hands and body so bad she had to sit down between shots. The simplicity and remarkable results of what I witnessed is the future of golf instruction.
Nick solved the mystery of the golf swing. Forever. Under Nick's guidance I improved quickly and as a teaching pro was able to qualify for PGA Tour events.
In the early 70's, when I was a teaching pro at the private Engineers CC on Long Island, NY, a group of members wanted to put up $250,000 to sponsor me for 5 years on the PGA tour. I didn't want the constant travel. I loved to teach. Watching golfers improve (many dramatically) made teaching a joy. Looking back I know I made the right choice.

Pat was born and raised in Tucson, AZ, and has been in and around the golf industry for 23 years. He attended the University of San Francisco and obtained a B.S. in Biology.
After graduating, he pursued professional golf and had success on the Pepsi Tour and Championship Player's Tour, placing in the top-5 eight times. He also tied the course record of 64 at his home course in Tucson.
After a few years of competing in the PGA Tour qualifying tournament ("q school") without success, he took lessons, changed his swing, and fell into a long slump. He tried everything from a biomechanics coach to a one-plane swing and nothing worked--until Pat found Arnie!
Arnie quickly got Pat back on track and dramatically simplified the game of golf for him. After working a couple years long-distance with Arnie, Pat moved to Palm Beach Gardens, FL, where he now resides. He has worked closely under Arnie for five years now, and has developed a passion for wanting to help others who are needlessly struggling with the game of golf--just as he did!
